A Remote Work Success Story: Zapier’s Approach to Employee Happiness
Kim Wilkes, Head of Talent Attraction at Zapier, shared insights into their success in fostering a positive and productive remote work environment.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic even happened, Zapier was a fully remote company. They have been purposeful in ensuring successful remote work from the very beginning. One of their employees’ favorite things about working for Zapier is the flexibility it provides to balance their work and family lives. Kim acknowledged that remote work may not be for everyone, especially if a more isolated work environment isn’t your cup of tea. But for those who love autonomy and flexibility, it is incredible.
Community is important to Zapier. Despite the remote nature of work, the company uses technology to stay connected. Their Slack channel is always loaded with updates on what Zapier is up to and the latest information. While it can be tricky to stay caught up on all this information, the transparency is appreciated by employees.
While remote work presents unique challenges, Zapier has successfully navigated these obstacles by implementing intentional strategies from the get-go. They prioritize concise and clear communication and transparency of all the company is doing continually. Communication is extremely important with remote work, and Zapier has communication training readily available to improve this skill. This approach has enabled Zapier to create a thriving remote work culture.
Kim shared how Zapier doesn’t require resumes to apply for a position. This removes typical barriers for entry and creates an inviting feel before a candidate even applies. They also show care to employees that are leaving the company by having open communication or offering assistance in the search for their next job. They really care about the individual and what’s best for them.
